It is amazing what one's find in your family history! My brother Kevin discovered a photo of my Dad from the Australian Women's Weekly magazine, published in July 1944. Dad is in the foreground of the photo. The location of the photo is Darwin (Northern Territory, Australia). (My father passed away many years ago).
FEEDBACK RECEIVED:
Sandra T. > Great photo. Precious records Kathy B. > Wow, the things found in old magazines! Your dad was a great guy! I still have the clothes horse and the stool he made. And I think of him every time I use them. Clare R. > That smile is so like my own father's! Maybe it was a 1940s thing?!! :-D Stephen M. > Great find John Weeks...keep well mate Bernadine A. > Very nostalgic for you I’m sure John . I love old photos David P. > Fantastic to see the whole page and your dad. Great find. M.H. > My dad was there during the war too, he would have been 105 last Saturday Bronwyn s. > Family friends of my parents also used to caravan at Emerald Lake - from Frankston! PS love the photo. Sue F. > Wonderful photo. Did your brother find it on the Trove collection? John Weeks > No. He is a collector of old newspapers and magazines. (I am very familiar with Trove. I will be checking out that photo on Trove tomorrow and get the full story) Sue F. > I have spent hours and hours trawling on Trove finding info to fill in details as part of family history research. Also other newspapers not yet digitalised at library and family history centres Dave M. > Lovely pic mate. I lost my dad almost a year ago and he, like yours, never lived here. But he absolutely loved this part of the world and was a major reason (I think) why I've lived here for 30-plus years. He loved telling his mates that I lived in The Hills as if it was a major point of pride. And I reckon he was right. Then and now. John Weeks > Thanks for your story, Dave. Much appreciated. Dave M. Cool. > As well as being a Hills dweller for more than 30 years, I'm also a magazine journo (cars and bikes, not gossip) so I dig old mags and their content. There was a time when the Weekly reflected human values - as opposed to made-up stories about cousins getting married and calling themsleves Royals - so I'm intrigued. Chances are you dad was photographed for something he did, or representing something important. Or at least relevant. Vivien B. > Great photo John. Sophie W. > That's a great photo John Eris T. > Great story. Lovely for you too have. Steve H. > He was obviously in the Armed Services implied by his, and other's uniform and the date. So that would make the location at that time "somewhere in Australia". Was your Dad a fighter pilot in the RAAF John? John Weeks > As far as we know, Dad was in the Army Reserves. Steve H. > John, OK so maybe up in the Territory or Far North Queensland. You could look him up on the Australian War Memorial Website which has a Service Personnel search engine. Good luck mate. John Weeks > Steve, here is the full story by going to the Government website: https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/rendition/nla.news-page4726649.pdf Jose G. > What a lovely surprise. Victoria M. > Love this Tess H. > I’m from Darwin and I can fully appreciate that you dad is wearing pants and socks! John Weeks > I have finally found a way to download the whole large page of the story from the Australian Women's Weekly, featuring the photo of my Dad. It is from the Government website Trove ... https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/rendition/nla.news-page4726649.pdf Dave M. > That's brilliant. What a keepsake! Leonie W. > Great to see... I found some family history from an article in the 1925 Argus while using spare time to Google!!!!!
